Maguire ready to defend title

Steven Maguire is ready and waiting to defend his Northern Island trophy despatie suffering from a broken rib. Last year Maguire beat Fergal O’Brien, Shaun Murphy, Peter Ebdon, Ding Junhui and David Gray to lift the trophy and this year he has said that there will be no excuses on August 24th when he will be back to defend his title. Maguire revealed in an interview that there are a couple of shots that he cant play because of his broken rib but it shouldn’t be an excuse cause they should be perfect by Belfast when the new season starts and Maguire hopes to continue playing better and progressing his carear further.
McEvoy Pots u16 Place

Young snooker ace Luke McEvoy has been rewarded for his hard work with a call up to the England u16 team for the competition in Wales later this year.
This is the first time McEvoy, 15 has represented England. He was called up after his second title of the season at the Willie Thorne u17 competition, which is held in Leicester. The win in Leicester moved McEvoy up five places to third in the standings.

Swail Returns to Belfast

It’s been reported this week that ageing Joe Swail can’t wait to return to top flight snooker at the Northern Ireland Trophy. This competition is of particular importance to Swail as he had a gruelling encounter last time round. The summer break and endless practicing should help bring Swail to the top of the pack.
Despite the heartache Swail has promised to put the encounter behind him and start his season in Belfast in late August in amazing form. Swail admitted it has taken him some time to get over but can’t wait for the new season to start.
Swail ranked No20 in the world is widely tipped to rise up the rankings this year and get into the top 16. It will certainly help that he is playing his home tournament to open the season.
O’Sullivan fined for comments

Snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan has been fined £2,750 and docked 700 ranking points for making coarse comments at a conference at the China Open. The 32-year old world champion “accepted his punishment” which were condemned by World Snooker Chairman, Sir Rodney Walker.
The Rocket has apologised to his fans, sponsors and the China Open and has indicated he never intended to offend anyone. Since the incident Ronnie won his third world title of his career after defeating Ali Carter.
Snooker On The BBC

The BBC have secured the rights to show the 2008/2009 season on the TV. Tournaments included in the rights include the UK Championship, the Masters, Grand Prix, Welsh Open and of course the thrilling action from the World Championship at the Crucible.
The usual Gang will be fronting the tournaments with Hazel Irvine and Ray Stubbs hosting with experts John Parrott and Steve Davis. Snooker wouldnt be snooker without the commentary team on board with the random comments from Clive Everton, Dennis Taylor, John Virgo, Willie Thorne and Terry Griffith.
O’Sullivan in hot water over unacceptable comments

Ronnie O’Sullivan has landed himself in trouble with World Snooker by making sexually suggestive comments at a recent media conference.
The World Champion made the comments at the China Open which has led him to being docked the 700 ranking points he earned playing Marco Fu, however O’Sullivan still remains world number one. The comments have also cost Ronnie £2,750.
O’Sullivan’s spokesman said “Ronnie has accepted his punishment.”
“He realises he made a mistake, but he never intended to offend anyone.”
“He wants to forget what happened and move forward.”
“He has apologised to World Snooker, the promoter of the China Open, his fans and also to his sponsors.
“He is keen to get on with his career and continue demonstrating why he is regarded as the best player in the world.”
Maguire breaks rib playing badminton!

Stephen Maguire’s preparation for the defence of his Northern Ireland Trophy title has been severely affected after he suffered a suspected cracked rib playing badminton.
World number 2 Steven Maguire has had to put snooker training on-hold due to sustaining a cracked rib whilst playing badminton. Maguire got the injury just before the snooker world series in Berlin, and is currently unable to bend down properly to take some snooker shots.
Maguire is awaiting the results of an x-ray hoping the news isn’t very serious so had can take place in the next snooker tournament in Belfast between August the 24 till the 31st.
Maguire recalls the injury stating that ‘he felt his hand go into his rib’! Maguire will be hoping this is just a cracked rib and nothing too serious. Maguire has been on form in recent tournaments beating Shaun Murphy 10-9 to win the China Open just a couple of months ago.
Graeme Dott back to winning ways after illness

Graeme Dott has recovered from his illness by winning the World Snooker Series in Berlin. Dott completed his return to the game by beating Shaun Murphy 5-4 in the final.
This is Dott’s first victory since way back to August last year, after suffering with depression. This victory brought an end to Dott’s run of 16 straight defeats.
Dott played excellent snooker throughout the final completing an exciting break of 113 in the very first frame, since there Dot didn’t look back and held his nerve to beat the talented Shaun Murphy. Graeme will be pleased to end this bad series of results, and is now fighting fit and looking forward to the future.
Walden wins SangSom 6-red Snooker tournament

The SangSom 6 red snooker Tournament in Bangkok has finished with world number 35 Ricky Walden winning the tournament. Walden played well throughout the tournament and well deserved his victory, for his efforts he walks away with the 500, 000 baht prize money.
On his way to the final Walden beat local here Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm in a thrilling final on Saturday night. Sangsom the sponsors of the snooker event have hailed it as a success and confirmed that they would sponsor the event for the next 3 years.
The event featured 17 snooker professionals including big names such as Ken Doherty, Peter Ebdin and world number 4 Mark Selby.
